April 2009
On April 1, TerraCarbon consultant Manuel Estrada, presented at a side event sponsored by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds at the UN climate meeting in Bonn. The presentation, “Towards a VCS AFOLU standard for Peatland Rewetting and Conservation projects”, presented the status of the current effort by Silvestrum, TerraCarbon, and a group of peatlands experts to develop a standard for for emission reduction projects related to peatlands for the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS). Drained peatlands represent a significant source of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (10% of global fossil fuel emissions) as falling water levels expose carbon rich peat, which is oxidized and emitted as CO2.
